Frequently asked questions

It's closer to a thick gloss than a traditional lip oil — and that's by design. The formula is water-free, built on a Polybutene base that creates a non-drip, cushiony texture that sits on the lips without sliding off. It applies like a gloss, delivers the glossy finish of a gloss, but is formulated without the drying ingredients (alcohol, synthetic polymers) that make some glosses feel tacky or dehydrating over time. Reviews consistently describe the texture as "thick honey" — which is accurate both to the feel and the amber-coloured appearance in the tube. On lips it goes on clear to very sheer warm, not yellow.

In this anhydrous (water-free) formula, both function as occlusive nourishing agents rather than water-based humectants. Honey Extract forms a thin barrier on the lip surface that locks in the lip's natural moisture and prevents transepidermal water loss — this is distinct from adding water, but the effect is lips that feel softer and less prone to chapping over time with consistent use. Milk Protein Extract provides amino acids and lipids that condition the lip skin surface, improving texture and suppleness. Neither is present at a high concentration in this formula — the primary job of providing moisture protection is done by the rich emollient base (Diisostearyl Malate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Tridecyl Trimellitate), with honey and milk adding a conditioning and marketing-relevant layer on top.

The thickness is real but the stickiness is well-controlled. The Silica Silylate and Silica Dimethyl Silylate in the formula are hydrophobic silica particles specifically included to counteract the tackiness that Polybutene can cause — they create a dry-touch surface feel that prevents the product from feeling like old-school sticky gloss. Reviews are consistent on this: it's glossy and present on the lips without being uncomfortable or hair-catching. On a scale from dry balm to sticky gloss, it sits at about 6/10 — noticeable but not unpleasant. Those who dislike any lip product thickness will not love it; those who want visible gloss and conditioning will.

The Tartrazine (CI 19140) and Sunset Yellow FCF (CI 15985) give the product its warm amber honey colour in the tube, but on lips the effect is clear to barely-there warm. Most people with light to medium skin tones will see their natural lip colour enhanced rather than tinted — a healthier, more saturated version of their own colour with a glossy finish. On deeper skin tones it reads as fully clear gloss. It's not a tinted lip product and won't provide visible colour payoff. The beauty of this is that it works over any lip product (tint, lipstick, liner) without muddying the colour underneath.

The Polybutene base creates a film that's more tenacious than a typical balm or lightweight lip oil — it holds up reasonably well through normal wear but doesn't survive eating or drinking. Expect one to two hours of visible gloss before reapplication is needed in active conditions. As a dry lips treatment or overnight condition it performs better — applied before sleep it stays on the lips long enough to deliver meaningful conditioning. The 5g size is small and portable, which makes reapplication practical throughout the day. One jar lasts approximately two to three months with daily use.

Over lipstick or tint it works well — the non-drip texture doesn't bleed the colour underneath, and the gloss adds dimension without looking heavy. Apply sparingly over matte finishes for the best result; over satin or gloss formulas it can feel too much. As a primer under lip products: yes, with one caveat. Apply a very thin layer, let it settle for 30 seconds, then apply your lip product. Too thick an application under lipstick causes sliding. Used correctly it softens the lip surface and makes lip colour apply more evenly — particularly useful over dry or flaky lips where colour tends to cling unevenly. It also prolongs the lifespan of lip tints by preventing the drying effect that accelerates tint fading.

The formula is relatively gentle for a gloss-type product — no mineral oil, no parabens, no harsh alcohols. The primary sensitivity concern is Fragrance: the formula contains Linalool as a disclosed allergen, so those with known fragrance sensitivity on lips should patch-test on the inner wrist before full lip application. The product is available in three variants: Original (honey-milk scent), Mint (same base with a cooling mint fragrance), and Peach (fruity scent). The base formula is identical across variants — only the fragrance changes. Confirm which variant is stocked at beautybar.ge and note it in the product listing, as buyers will search for specific scents.
