Frequently asked questions

Snail Secretion Filtrate — commonly called snail mucin — is the excretion produced by snails as a protective mechanism for their own skin and shell repair. In skincare it's one of the few ingredients that simultaneously addresses multiple concerns: it's a humectant that draws and binds moisture, it contains glycoproteins and proteoglycans that support collagen and elastin synthesis, it has documented wound-healing and scar-fading properties, and it carries natural allantoin, hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, and peptides as part of its biological composition. In a toner format it delivers these actives after cleansing when the skin is bare and most receptive — preparing the skin to absorb what follows in the routine. The result is skin that feels plump, conditioned, and noticeably smoother with consistent use.

Two ingredients in particular are worth noting. Ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10) — a powerful antioxidant produced naturally by the body that declines with age — is rarely seen in accessible-tier toners. It protects against oxidative damage, supports cellular energy, and has documented efficacy in reducing fine lines and improving skin texture. Camellia Sinensis Callus Extract is green tea stem cell culture — a biotechnology ingredient that differs from standard green tea extract by using undifferentiated plant cells with higher bioavailability. The formula also contains Morus Alba Bark Extract (mulberry), a tyrosinase inhibitor that contributes mild brightening support. No fragrance and no parabens make this one of the cleaner formulas in Farmstay's accessible range.

Alcohol appears fourth in the ingredient list, indicating it's present at a meaningful concentration — not a trace amount. In toners, alcohol serves to help the formula absorb quickly, create a cooling sensation, and enhance the penetration of actives that follow. The legitimate concern is that at significant concentrations, alcohol can disrupt the skin barrier and cause dryness or sensitivity over time, particularly for already-dry or compromised skin. For oily and combination skin this formula is well-suited — the alcohol aids absorption and leaves no greasy residue. For dry or sensitive skin, use it in the morning only (not twice daily) and always follow immediately with a hydrating serum or moisturiser. It is not an alcohol-free formula — if you specifically need alcohol-free, this isn't the right product.

A humectant draws water into the skin from the environment and from deeper skin layers — it increases moisture content but doesn't seal it in. This toner contains nine humectant ingredients (Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Betaine, Snail Secretion Filtrate, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Aloe Vera, Hyaluronic Acid, Allantoin, 1,2-Hexanediol) and zero occlusive ingredients — meaning nothing in the formula creates a barrier to retain that moisture. In dry climates or air-conditioned environments, a purely humectant product used alone can actually draw moisture out of the skin rather than into it. Always follow this toner with a moisturiser containing occlusive or emollient ingredients — a cream, oil, or emulsion — to lock in what the toner delivers. In Georgia's climate this is especially important in winter months.

The formula profile — purely humectant, no fragrance, no parabens, lightweight — suits all skin types but is particularly well-matched for oily and combination skin that needs hydration without heaviness, and for skin dealing with uneven tone, post-acne marks, or early signs of ageing. The snail mucin addresses scarring and texture; Morus Alba brightens dark spots; Ubiquinone and green tea extracts protect against further environmental damage; Hyaluronic Acid and the humectant complex deliver immediate plumping and moisture. For dry skin it works well but must be followed by a rich moisturiser. For sensitive skin the absence of fragrance and parabens is a genuine advantage — check the Alcohol position in the list and monitor your skin's response in the first week.

Apply immediately after cleansing while skin is still slightly damp — dampness enhances humectant absorption. Dispense a small amount onto a cotton pad or directly into clean hands, press gently into the face and neck, and pat until absorbed. Do not rub. Follow within 30 to 60 seconds with your serum, essence, or moisturiser — don't let the toner dry completely before applying the next step, as this reduces its humectant effectiveness. Use morning and evening, or morning only if your skin is on the dry or sensitive side given the alcohol content. It layers well under any serum or moisturiser and doesn't interfere with actives like niacinamide, vitamin C, or retinol.

These are different formats solving different problems. The COSRX 96 Mucin Essence uses Snail Secretion Filtrate as 96% of the formula — it's essentially pure snail mucin in a gel-essence format, with minimal additional actives. The Farmstay Snail Toner uses snail mucin as one of several actives in a more complex formula that adds CoQ10, green tea stem cell extract, mulberry brightening, and hydrolyzed collagen. COSRX is the better choice if snail mucin's specific repair and healing properties are your singular focus — the concentration is unmatched. Farmstay is the better choice if you want snail mucin as part of a broader multi-benefit toner that also addresses tone, antioxidant protection, and collagen support. Price-per-ml, Farmstay is significantly more accessible. For a routine on a budget, it's a strong alternative to spending more on both a toner and a separate snail essence.
