Frequently asked questions

Three things distinguish it. First, a low pH formulation — the Citric Acid pH adjuster keeps the cleanser closer to skin's natural acid mantle (pH 4.5–5.5), compared to most conventional cleansers and all bar soaps which sit at alkaline pH levels that can disrupt the barrier. Second, a mild, sulphate-free surfactant system built from coconut-derived Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Coco-Betaine, and Coco-Glucoside — designed to cleanse without stripping. Third, both Tea Tree Leaf Extract and Tea Tree Leaf Oil are included for antibacterial support in a rinse-off format.

The skin's surface naturally maintains a pH of approximately 4.5–5.5, known as the acid mantle, which supports barrier integrity and keeps beneficial skin microorganisms in balance. When a cleanser is alkaline — as most traditional foam cleansers and all bar soaps are — it temporarily raises the skin's surface pH, disrupting the acid mantle and weakening the barrier. This can cause tightness, dryness, and increased sensitivity, and takes the skin time to re-acidify. A low pH cleanser preserves the acid mantle, meaning the skin's barrier is less compromised after washing and more ready to receive the actives applied in subsequent routine steps.

They're related but functionally distinct. Tea Tree Leaf Extract is a water-soluble preparation that captures the water-soluble antimicrobial compounds of the tea tree plant — gentler and lower concentration, well-suited to leave-on products. Tea Tree Leaf Oil is the concentrated essential oil containing terpinen-4-ol at high levels — more potent antibacterial activity but also higher potential for irritation in sensitive individuals. Using both in a rinse-off cleanser is practical: the oil provides the stronger antibacterial effect during the wash, and because it's rinsed off rather than left on skin, the irritation risk is lower than with a leave-on product containing essential oil. The extract adds a secondary soothing and antimicrobial layer.

The sulphate-free, low pH surfactant system and the absence of harsh alcohol make it fundamentally gentler than most foam cleansers. However, the formula contains eleven essential oils — including Bergamot Oil, Grapefruit Peel Oil, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Cornmint, Citronella, and Geranium — which create a complex aromatic profile and a meaningful potential for fragrance sensitisation, particularly for reactive skin. As a rinse-off product the contact time is short, reducing risk compared to a leave-on. But people with known fragrance sensitivity or essential oil reactions should approach with caution. The Centella, Madecassoside, and Panthenol in the formula provide genuine soothing support for the majority of users.

Conventional cleansers often use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) as the primary surfactant — effective at removing oil and producing dense foam, but known to disrupt the skin barrier and cause dryness and irritation with regular use, particularly on sensitive or acne-prone skin. This cleanser uses Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Coco-Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, and Coco-Glucoside instead — all coconut-derived, mild surfactants that cleanse effectively at lower concentrations and with significantly less barrier disruption. The Polyquaternium-67 conditioning polymer also counteracts the "tight" feeling after washing that even mild cleansers can cause.

Yes — and it's better suited as the second cleanse rather than the first. Double cleansing uses an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve sunscreen and makeup, followed by a water-based foam or gel cleanser to remove the emulsified residue and cleanse the skin itself. This Farmstay cleanser is water-based and sulphate-free, making it ideal as the second step — it cleanses the skin without re-stripping the barrier after the oil cleanse has already done the heavy lifting. If you use a separate oil cleanser first (such as the Missha Super Off Cleansing Oil), this follows naturally as the second step.

For acne-prone skin, a low pH, sulphate-free cleanser is one of the most important foundation choices — it removes excess sebum and surface bacteria without the barrier disruption that worsens inflammation. This cleanser's tea tree dual-action (extract + oil) and mild surfactant system make it a strong daily option morning and evening. In the morning, use it to remove overnight sebum and prep skin for actives. In the evening, use it as the second step after an oil cleanser to remove sunscreen fully. Avoid over-washing — twice daily is sufficient; more frequent use even of mild cleansers can still disrupt the barrier.
