Frequently asked questions

This is a pH 5.5 gel cleanser formulated specifically for skin that needs repair alongside daily cleansing — damaged barrier, post-acne recovery, persistent sensitivity, or skin that feels tight and reactive after washing. It combines black snail secretion filtrate at 9,940 ppm and Truecica (Centella Asiatica complex) at 200 ppm with ceramide NP, panthenol, and 17 amino acids to cleanse without stripping and actively support barrier recovery at the same time.

Healthy skin has a slightly acidic pH of around 4.5–5.5. Most conventional cleansers are alkaline (pH 7–10), which temporarily disrupts the skin's acid mantle — the protective layer that keeps bacteria out and moisture in. Washing with an alkaline cleanser repeatedly weakens the barrier over time, especially for sensitive or acne-prone skin. A pH 5.5 cleanser like this one works in the same range as the skin's natural pH, so cleansing does not destabilise the barrier it is supposed to protect.

Truecica is Some By Mi's branded name for their concentrated Centella Asiatica complex. Regular Centella Asiatica extract contains varying levels of its four active compounds. Truecica specifies the individual actives at confirmed concentrations: asiaticoside at 4 ppm, asiatic acid at 3 ppm, madecassic acid at 3 ppm, and madecassoside at 1 ppm. These compounds reduce inflammation, support collagen synthesis, and accelerate skin barrier repair. The branding distinguishes it from generic Centella listing and signals consistent potency.

This is a fair question and the honest answer is nuanced. Snail secretion filtrate at 9,940 ppm delivers glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, and allantoin — all of which begin interacting with the skin on contact. In a rinse-off cleanser the contact time is short (under 60 seconds typically), so the barrier-repair and regenerative benefits are less pronounced than in a leave-on serum. However, the gentleness of the surfactant system combined with snail filtrate's soothing properties means the cleansing step causes significantly less disruption than a standard foam — which is itself a meaningful benefit.

The ingredient list confirms all 17: glycine, serine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, leucine, alanine, lysine, arginine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, threonine, proline, valine, isoleucine, histidine, cysteine, and methionine. Amino acids are the building blocks of the skin's natural moisturising factor (NMF) — the system that keeps the outer skin layer hydrated and functional. In a cleanser, they help maintain hydration levels during washing rather than stripping them, which is especially relevant for dry, sensitive, or barrier-compromised skin.

It is suitable for acne-prone skin, specifically for the subset that has a weakened or over-stripped barrier from prior harsh treatments — medicated cleansers, excessive acid use, or over-exfoliation. The formula contains tea tree leaf extract at 100 ppm for mild antibacterial support and licorice root extract for post-acne brightening, alongside the barrier-repair actives. It does not contain AHA or BHA, so it will not actively clear congestion — but as a gentle daily cleanser used alongside other targeted treatments, it fits well.

Twice daily is appropriate and recommended for this cleanser. The pH 5.5 formula and amino acid-based surfactant system are gentle enough for morning and evening use without causing dryness or barrier disruption. For skin that is actively recovering from damage or irritation, evening use with a thorough rinse is most important; a lighter morning rinse with just water may be sufficient if your skin is very reactive. This cleanser is specifically designed to be used consistently — its barrier-building benefits accumulate with regular use.
