Frequently asked questions

This is a daily gentle exfoliating cleanser designed for sensitive, acne-prone, and reactive skin that needs regular cleansing without irritation. Gluconolactone — the PHA in this formula — removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores at the surface level while maintaining the skin's moisture balance. The result with regular use is smoother texture, visibly refined pores, and a clearer complexion, without the redness or tightness that harsher cleansers can cause.

PHA stands for polyhydroxy acid — in this product, gluconolactone. All three are exfoliating acids, but they work differently. AHA (like glycolic acid) works on the skin surface and can cause stinging or sensitivity. BHA (salicylic acid) penetrates inside the pore and is best for oily, congested skin. PHA has the largest molecular structure of the three, which means it penetrates more slowly and stays closer to the surface — delivering gentler exfoliation with significantly less risk of irritation or photosensitivity. It also has humectant properties, meaning it draws moisture into the skin while it exfoliates.

The exfoliating base is genuinely well-suited to sensitive skin — gluconolactone at 0.5% in a sulfate-free, sodium cocoyl isethionate formula is one of the gentlest daily exfoliating systems available. That said, the formula contains fragrance (Parfum) and a significant botanical blend including multiple mint extracts, peppermint, lavender, and thyme, which can cause reactions in skin that is sensitive to fragrance or essential oil components. The exfoliation itself is safe for sensitive skin; those with fragrance sensitivity should patch test first.

Yes. Gluconolactone behaves differently from glycolic or salicylic acid — because it absorbs more slowly, lower concentrations deliver meaningful exfoliation without the irritation risk associated with higher-percentage AHAs or BHAs. At 5,000ppm (0.5%) in a daily rinse-off formula, gluconolactone provides consistent surface renewal that gradually improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of pores, and supports a more even tone. Results are cumulative rather than immediate — expect visible improvement after 3–4 weeks of consistent daily use.

Yes, with some care. Because PHA is the gentlest of the three hydroxy acids, it is the least likely to over-exfoliate when layered with other actives. A common approach is to use this cleanser in the morning and reserve your retinol or leave-on exfoliant for the evening. If you use both in the same routine, monitor for dryness or increased sensitivity. PHA cleansers are generally well-tolerated alongside retinol — far more so than AHA or BHA cleansers used in the same session.

The decision comes down to your primary concern and skin tolerance. The BHA Purifying Cleanser contains 0.5% salicylic acid and is the stronger choice for oily, congested, and breakout-prone skin — it penetrates deeper into the pore and controls sebum more aggressively. The PHA Clarifying Cleanser is the right choice if you want gentle exfoliation without disrupting a sensitive or compromised barrier — skin that reacts easily, is post-procedure, or is using strong actives elsewhere in the routine. Both are functional. They are not interchangeable.

Apply a small amount to damp skin, work into a lather and massage gently for 30–60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. It can be used once or twice daily. Unlike AHA products, PHA does not significantly increase photosensitivity — but daily SPF is always good practice regardless, especially after any exfoliating cleanser. Follow with your toner and moisturiser as normal. No special waiting period is needed before applying the rest of your routine.
